Keep Longview Beautiful Completes Litter Index

{summary}
Keep Longview Beautiful volunteers completed Longview’s fifth annual litter index Monday afternoon. The 2010 litter index score for Longview is 1.22 – that’s down from 1.48 last year and shows a continued improvement from 2006. The litter index score was 1.72 in 2008, 1.69 in 2007 and 2.1 in 2006.

To determine what sites to survey, a map of Longview was divided into six equal sections, and ten locations per section were randomly selected for measurement. Every section saw an improvement in average score from last year, with the most significant improvement coming from section one which includes Westdale at Highway 80, 1845 at Birdsong, and the Elderville area at Interstate 20. This section scored an average of 2.1 in 2009 and 2008 but improved this year to 1.5.
“We use these results to help us determine exactly where to concentrate our efforts in future citywide cleanup events,” said KLB President Ben March. “These numbers are exciting but we know our work is not done.”
Litter Index volunteers also noted a few areas that had excessive littering even though those areas were not part of the index. Of particular note were Richardson street at the railroad track as well as the area around the creek at Wal Street.
The volunteers scored the exact locations used in the last four litter indexes. The locations include a mix of residential, commercial, industrial and rural areas. Each site is ranked on a numeric scale from 1 to 4; a score of “1” means there is no litter, “2” that it is slightly littered, “3” it is littered and “4” it is extremely littered. Once the survey is complete the scores are averaged to determine the City’s overall score.
Keep Longview Beautiful has been a 501(C)3 non-profit organization since 1979, and our mission is to engage the Longview community to take greater responsibility for improving their environment. By focusing on litter abatement, solid waste reduction and beautification we can all make the greater Longview area a cleaner, healthier, safer and more beautiful place in which to live, work and play.

KLB Conducts Fifth Annual Litter Index

{summary}
Longview’s fifth annual litter index will be conducted by Keep Longview Beautiful (KLB) volunteers on July 22 and 23. As a Keep America Beautiful (KAB) city, a litter index of our community is required once a year. The survey tool is provided by KAB and has been used in over 560 affiliate cities nationwide.

“The litter index tells us which areas of Longview we need to target during our future citywide cleanups,” said KLB President Ben March.

To determine what sites to survey, a map of Longview was divided into six equal sections, and ten locations per section were randomly selected for measurement. The locations include a mix of residential, commercial, industrial and rural areas. The volunteers will be re-scoring the exact locations used in the last three litter indexes.

Volunteers judge locations according to KAB guidelines on a numeric scale from 1 to 4. A score of “1” means there is no litter, “2” that it is slightly littered, “3” it is littered and “4” it is extremely littered. All of the scores are averaged to determine Longview’s litter score, which decreased from 2.1 in 2006 to 1.48 in 2009.
